An exceptional woodworking example of biomorphic sculptured furniture by Ed Merklinger. Merklinger mastered the technique of stack lamination introduced by Wendell Castle in the 1960s. Merklinger carved this one-of-a-kind piece of laminated walnut to blend the line between art and furniture design. He was an accomplished cabinetmaker and fine woodworker, designing and crafting furniture that was featured at several juried art/craft shows. His work was sold at galleries in NY and NJ and this table was exhibited at Doubletree Gallery in Montclair NJ in 1977. The table is marked with Merklingers' brass woodworking mark and is accompanied with the original flyer and photograph from his exhibition in 1977. The unique table could also be easily used as a entry bench.
